Five People Killed in Tractor-Trailer Crash in Maryland

Chris Welsh, Esq. www.welsh-law.com Five people, including a pregnant woman, were killed this past weekend in an early morning crash on Saturday in a collision between their vehicle and a tractor-trailer. The collision occurred around 1:15 am in Wye Mills, Md. at the intersection of routes 50 and 313. It is unknown who was driving at the time, but it is believe that the tractor-trailer was traveling in the southbound when it hit the victims’ westbound 2006 Suzuki Forenza on the passenger side and rolled over the vehicle. Freight Train and School Bus Collide in North Dakota, 2 Killed

Chris Welsh, Esq. Terrible news out of North Dakota today. A school bus carrying 13 students was hit by a freight train , killing the bus driver and a 17-year-old student. The 12 survivors were treated at Altru hospital in Grand Forks. The accident occurred Monday afternoon about 20 miles about 20 miles west of Grand Forks when a BNSF Railway train hit the right front side of the bus, which was taking students to school. Family Lost in Tragic Semi-Truck Accident in Missouri

Chris Welsh, Esq. Heartbreaking news out of Missouri this holiday season. Police are investigating an accident on a Kansas City freeway that claimed the lives of a small family. Five people, including three toddlers under the age of three, were killed in the accident. The accident occurred last Saturday evening when the victims’ vehicle stopped on the outermost lane of Interstate 435 and was struck from behind by a semi-truck. It remains unclear if the car had become disabled or ran out of gas. The accident, which police describe the scene as ‘catastrophic,’ shut down traffic for about four hours. …

Federal Regulators: Truck Drivers Only Have to Report Defects and Malfunctions

Chris Welsh, Esq. welsh-law.com   Federal regulators are making all sorts of moves at the moment to modify “eliminating or modifying out-of-date, ineffective or overly-burdensome rules and reducing regulatory burdens on the private sector.” In short, some are positive and others negative.  While the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (“FMCSA”) is currently looking to better outdated insurance policies for trucks and buses (see more here), the U.S. Department of Transportation (“US DOT”) just eliminated the requirement that professional truck drivers file safety reports on their vehicles after all pre- and post-trip inspections.
