Lumber Liquidators Investigation and Lawsuits May 2015

Lumber Liquidators is a 22-year-old North American specialty hardwood floor retailer whose low prices have increased their profits and customer base. The mega retailer has 360 stores in 46 states across the nation, with over 100 million square of flooring installed in homes annually. Nearly two years ago, a test commissioned by Seeking Alpha, a crowd-funded research firm, stated that flooring samples contained over three times the level of acceptable formaldehyde emissions. The Department of Justice launched an investigation into illegal wood sourcing processes that had begun to plague the retailer.

An early March 60 Minutes (CBS News) segment showed an investigation into the manufacturing of floor panels inside Chinese factories. Although the undercover video exposed workers claiming that the boards are not compliant with state levels, the founder and head of Lumber Liquidators, Tom Sullivan, defended his company’s practices, shooting down lab results of these compromising results.

The problem? Formaldehyde levels in the flooring.

Formaldehyde is classified as a cancer-causing chemical, meaning there are serious health risks associated with living in a home that contains this laminated flooring. Having the flooring installed in a home with young children especially could be disconcerting, as they could breathe in fumes emanating from the flooring when they crawl.

There are risks of respiratory issues associated with exposure to low levels of formaldehyde, and in some instances, high levels of exposure have been linked to nasopharyngeal cancer as well as myeloid leukemia.

Some of the side effects listed by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) associated with formaldehyde exposure include:

  • burning, watery, stinging eye irritation
  • runny nose, sneezing, throat and nose irritation
  • chest tightness
  • headaches
  • chronic sinus infections
  • dry flaky skin, skin rashes or blisters
  • bronchitis, coughing or chronic wheezing
