Trial date set in lawsuit over Lincoln bus wreck
A trial date has been set in a wrongful death lawsuit that was filed after a Lincoln County school bus collided head-on with a pickup truck in May.
No new motions were made during a Friday hearing for the lawsuit, but Circuit Court Judge David A. Tapp scheduled another review for Jan. 9 and a trial for July 6.
The lawsuit concerns a May 7 wreck when, according to police, a school bus driven by Judy Asbery crossed the center line on Ky. 78 between Hustonville and Stanford and collided with a truck driven by 36-year-old Stanford resident Otis Coleman.
Coleman was airlifted from the scene but later died from injuries sustained in the wreck, officials have said.
The lawsuit, brought by Coleman’s father, alleges that Asbery operated the bus in a negligent and reckless manner, causing Coleman’s death. It also accuses Superintendent Karen Hatter and former transportation director Ronnie Deatherage of failing to properly train, supervise and discipline Asbery, despite receiving complaints about her conduct as a bus driver.
